Who We Are:
We are a diverse and multidisciplinary group of aspiring researchers with a wide range of backgrounds, experience levels, and interests. We are bound by curiosity and not academic discipline. We have an appreciation for life experiences over educational achievement.
What We Do:
We study attention and decision making across contexts (real-world/lab) and individuals, with the following practices:
When we are investigating individual differences, we use sensitivity when describing them.
Disorders are written from a differences approach and not a deficits approach.
We include people of all genders and ethnicities in our research.
Everyone in the lab is given the opportunity to be involved in research in a meaningful way, because everybody has a place in the research process.
We adopt equitable practices during the recruitment process. See “Join Our Team” for more information.
Why These Are Important To Us:
Privilege creates blind spots, not just in society but also in research. We are open to the lived experiences of others to inform the work we do and lessen the impact of these blind spots. We are committed to achieving a better awareness of the world through our research and thus encourage the integration of different worldviews. Beyond helping our research, having a more diverse lab helps us learn to be better people and develop a sense of empathy.
From a historical standpoint, past research studies did not follow ethical guidelines and helped further reinforce prejudice in society, leading to the exclusion of innovative ideas from the excluded groups. Furthermore, non-inclusive research is bad science, as findings don’t generalize well to the general population.
